Terms
Here's a non-extensive list of common terms found in the fandom:
- VODs - VOD is the name referred to the original livestream file. If it is edited down, it becomes a video, but if it retains minimal editing, it's considered a VOD.
- mcyt - Stands for MineCraft YouTuber. It literally means anyone who has recorded themselves or have appeared in someone else's recording of Minecraft that has been posted online to Youtube. Today, it also includes a more general group of content creators who either started their rise to success by making Minecraft content and don't anymore or who still explicitly make Minecraft content that isn't published on Youtube and instead published elsewhere.
- pvp, pvp'er - Stands for Player vs Player. This can mean when players fight each other, but it's usually a title given to players who are extremely good at Minecraft combat, it becomes what that player is known for.
- Optifine - You might hear some creators talk about this in passing on their streams. Optifine is a popular minecraft mod that helps the game run smoother while also providing more options for creators to control their video settings. Most creators run minecraft through optifine unless their server mods directly contradict it.
- Shaders - You might hear some creators talk about this in passing on their streams. Shaders are a sort of mod that one can install to make the game have different and realistic lighting. Different from resource packs, as resource packs change the actual textures of the game itself.
- lore - Lore in most stories mean background information or worldbuilding beyond what the audience is shown via the characters and storyline. However, in the fandom space, lore is meant as an indicator of the level of roleplaying the livestream will be. If a stream is labled with a lore tag, it means the creators are in character most, if not all, of the time they are live and the story from the livestream is considered noteworthy.
- Semi-lore - Semi-lore is also in the same category as lore. While outside of context, semi-lore may seem a strange and unusual word, it acts as a tag for livestreams where there are either elements of serious lore roleplaying in the livestream but most of the stream is the creator having fun and goofing off or there are no serious story events occuring in the livestream, but more of a slice-of-life point of view from the character's eyes as they go about their day.
- canon, canonical - Canon, much like lore, has taken to mean a different approach in this fandom. Usually, canon means what counts in acutuality, like the original use coming from Chrisitanity to definitively say what books were included in the bible and what books weren't for a specific denomination of Christianity (ie, there are some books in the Catholic bible that aren't in a Protestant bible). Much like Chrisitanity, canon is a way for content creators to draw a line between what happened storywise and what happened because the story medium wasn't cooperating (ie, this Minecraft death was significant and one of my three lives lost vs this Minecraft death was not canon because I didn't realize I walked off a cliff.) Today, there are also other uses of canon in some character's stories that don't perfectly align or even contradict other character's canonical stories, leaving the auidience scratching their head at what is true (much like the bible itself does).
- sbi - sbi stands for Sleepy Boys, Inc. and is shorthand for the trio Wilbur, Technoblade, and Philza after they posted identical Twitter posts very late at night. This title has also began to include and refer to Tommy as well, especially after MCC4 when all four of them were on a team together and won. SBI has since evolved into a more familial dynamic between its members and acts as a catch-all for their interactions. Some fans have taken it upon themselves to also include Tubbo into this group, but he is not technically considered part of it.
- dnf - dnf is shorthand for the ship name between Dream and GeorgeNotFound. That is all I have to say on this topic. You may google this for more information at your own risk.
- c! - Putting this in front of a creator's name means you're talking explicitly about the character they play. Example: c!Tubbo
- cc! - Putting this in front of a creator's name means you're talking explicitly about the content creator themselves. Example: cc!Dream
- dsmp!, d! - Used to talk about the Dream SMP character, especially if the creator plays on multiple servers. Example: dsmp!Wilbur, d!Tommy
- osmp!, o! - Used to talk about the Origns SMP character, especially if the creator plays on multiple servers. Example: osmp!Ranboo, o!Philza
- hc! - This means the version of the character if they were put into the Hermitcraft world from a different SMP. Mostly an AU tag for characters from the Dream SMP. Example: hc!Tommy
- genloss!, gl! - While not explicitly mcyt related, Ranboo is still considered to be mcyt by overlap. Generation Loss, or gen loss, is one of his projects that revolves around analog horror in the '90s, spawning many fanarts and interpretations of the aesthetic without any content to base it off of. Mostly an AU tag. Example: genloss!Ranboo, gl!Crumb
- watcher!Grian - Grian is a mcyt known for his Hermitcraft builds and betrayals in the 3rd life series. However, he got his start on a server called Evo, a server that had its players progress through different versions of Minecraft to find portals to bring them to the next version. They were constantly watched by entities called Watchers who had powers to manipulate the server at will. When Grian found the last portal, he found himself alone on the other side with the message to join the Watchers themselves. Many fans like to include the powers that Grian gained from joining the Watchers to his other series. Mostly an AU tag.
